Youth festival in Up State New York, May 25-26, 2012
"Rejoice in the Lord always!"
Around 300 teenagers from Washington DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Illinois, and New York joined 100 religious men and women from the Religious Family of the Institute of the Incarnate Word in order to deepen their faith and draw closer to Christ and His Church.
The 12th annual IVE Youth Festival was held at St. Patrick’s Retreat House in Upstate New York from Friday May 25th to Sunday May 27th.

Deacon John J. Turner, Rest in Peace!
John Hamilton Turner, born August 29, 1928 to John O. Toerner and Susan Hamilton Toerner in Lancaster, PA. He was a 1946 graduate of Regis H.S., New York City. He won a full academic scholarship to St. Peter's University in Jersey City, where he received a B.A. degree. He later attended Pace, where he earned a second degree. He spent time as a novice Trappist monk at Gethsemani Monastery in Kentucky. He later left the monastic life and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Maria do Rosario Fonseca of Lisbon, Portugal on September 7, 1957 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. He moved his family to Mt. Rainier, MD in 1965, taking a position with the U.S. Treasury Department from where he retired after many years of service. He was ordained a deacon at St. Matthews Cathedral, Washington DC in 1996 and served St. James Catholic Church in Mt. Rainier, MD. He is survived by his wife Maria and their seven children. He also leaves 15 grandchildren, and two siblings.
There will be viewings at Gasch's Funeral Home P.A., 4739 Baltimore Ave., Hyattsville, MD on Thursday, May 10, 2 to 9 p.m. and at St. James Catholic Church, Mt. Rainier, MD on Friday, May 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. A funeral mass will follow. The mass will be followed by burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Bladensburg Rd., N.E. Washington, DC.

Confirmation Retreat on May 5th, 2012
Repeating last week's effort, the brothers, sisters, and lay catechists prepared the confirmation retreat on Saturday, May 5th. About 80 teenagers received the sacrament of confession in preparation for their upcoming confirmation ceremony on May 22nd/23rd.
The retreat included the opportunity for confession, the rosary, Holy Hour, talks on the Scapular, Forgiveness, and what it means being a soldier for Christ, and conferral of the Blessed Scapular.
First Communion Retreat on April 28th, 2012
On Saturday, April 28th, about 180 children received the sacrament of confession in preparation for their First Communion on May 12th/13th.
Besides a time to go to confession, the retreat included Holy hour, talks on the Mass, Divine Mercy, and an outdoor procession while praying the Rosary.

El Grupo de Oración María Mensajera, organizó un retiro de sanación los dias viernes 27 y sábado 28 de Abril, el cual contó con la participacion de unas 200 personas.
Desde El Salvador nos visitó el Padre Basilio Arevalo, quien dirijio las predicaciones.

2012 Cardinal's Appeal Begins
Many of our parishioners have received a mailing this week from Cardinal Wuerl. He has asked that you make a pledge to the 201 2 Cardinal’s Appeal.
The Appeal not only funds the operations of the archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish.
This year, the theme of the Appeal is, “Seek first the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 6:33) As we seek first the kingdom of God, we have the capability of helping it to be present in our lives and in the lives of those around us. How does this happen? Through our works of charity, our works of love, our works of love and compassion. Contributions to the Cardinal’s Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the needs of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives.
Please prayerfully consider a generous pledge to the 2012 Cardinal’s Appeal.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebrations
On Monday, December 12, St. James' celebrated the traditional Prayer Vigil (12am-8am), and the massive procession and Mass, followed by a play on our Lady of Guadalupe's apparitions and different traditional dances.
We estimate that about 5,000 people visited our parish to attend the celebrations throughout the night and day.

Youth Group Pilgrimage to St. Ignatius Church at Chapel Point
St. Ignatius Church at Chapel Point was founded in 1641 by Father Andrew White, a prominent English Jesuit, who was born in London in 1579 and who was one of the first Jesuits to arrive in Maryland.
The "relic of the true cross" was brought from England by Fr. Andrew White, S.J. in 1634. He wore it around his neck in a silver and glass case, which was specially made for the relic.
Earlier that day we visited an Equestrian Park, and were able to ride horses and a horse-cart.
Back in Washington D.C., we had Mass at the convent, had a pizza night, and watched pictures and videos from our trip to Spain, Portugal and France for WYD 2011. Click HERE to see pictures of the trip.

St. James has a group for special needs families - the "Blessed Carlos Gnocchi" Group.

St. James' Holy Name Society's Annual Mass and Awards Banquet
The St. James Holy Name Society's Annual Mass and Awards Banquet took place on Monday, October 17, 2011. Mass was followed by Dinner in the Hughes Room.
At the Dinner, Berni Wells was awarded Man of the Year, Maria Cordene as Woman of the Year, and Alberto Torres as the Altar Server of the Year. Also, Five Phantom Festival winners were announced.

Filipino Mass on Sunday, October 16th
On Sunday, October 16th, at 4:00 pm, the members of the Filipino community gathered for a special Mass in Tagalog in order to honor our Blessed Mother.
Afterwards, dinner was provided at the Hugh’s Room for all who attended the ceremony.

Farewell to Sr. Trinite, SSVM on September 24th
Our dear sacristan, Sr. Trinité, has joinned the contemplative branch of the Servants of the Lord on October of this year. That means that, from now on, she will lead a life of contemplation and silence in the peace of a cloistered convent.
Let us thank God for her vocation, for withdrawal from the world for the sake of leading a more intense life of prayer in solitude is nothing other than a very particular way of living and expressing the paschal mystery of Christ, which is death ordained toward resurrection.

St. James' Present at World Youth Day: Madrid 2011
Our trip has come to an end! After journeying thoughout some of the most important Marian Shrines of the World, and meeting our Holy Father Benedict XVI, we made our way back to Mount Rainier.

Corpus Christi Procession
On Sunday, June 26th, after the 9:30 am Mass, parishioners took part of a procession with the Blessed Sacrament, as we celebrated the Real Presence of our Lord in the Eucharist.
May Mary, who bearing Jesus in her womb was the first living “tabernacle” of the Eucharist, communicate to us her same faith in the holy mystery of the Body and Blood of her divine Son, so that it may truly be the center of our lives.

St. Thomas Aquinas' Study Group
Our purpose is to get together with other Catholic youths in order to deepen our knowledge and love of God. In order to do so, we study the treasure of our faith: all Catholic doctrine contained in Tradition, Scripture, and taught by the Holy Father and the bishops in union with him. We also take as our main teacher the explanation of the faith as taught by St. Thomas Aquinas, the Angelic Doctor.
The members of this group are teenage catechism assistants or teachers in our CCD program, though it is also open to other teenagers who would like to learn more about our faith.
We usually meet every other Friday, from 7 to 9 pm.
Next meeting: Friday, December 10, 7-9pm.
